As Shouma was falling apace he turned to the sky and shouted with might and main.
At the same moment, fireworks were scattered in the air. These ones were not the same scrimpy ones when he called Subaru or Enishi, but dozens of times bigger. It was like a miniature explosion.
“You’ve finally realised it, Shouma.”
It was Tendou who appeared. However, he was not dressed in his usual worn out clothes, but in a kimono. It was a colourless one, as if he had just stepped out of a monochrome world.
Only his brown hair stood out strangely. On his forehead, were the two small, familiar looking, horns of his. And his red eyes, like the berries of a Heavenly Bamboo.
For some reason, it made the boy feel kind of nostalgic in his heart.
“Then, let’s make all this fuss look like a temporary dream …”
Shouma was surprised by his childhood memories, which had been brought back by that well-known voice. It was that moment, when, what he had always thought of as a dream, now took a clear shape.
It surely was not a dream.
That voice. That figure. That face.
“Tendou-san, could it be…?”
Tendou twisted his head to look at him.
To Shouma’s pressing question of the past, his reaction was the same happy-go-lucky, which the boy knew so well. But then, he remembered that they, at the very moment, were falling quite a bit.
The next thing he knew, he could clearly see the ground right below him.
“Whoa, whoa! Subaru!”
He hurriedly called out to Subaru. With that same moment, a large pelt spread out beneath them.
Both the boy and his employer landed on it wispily.
The pelt billowed under the weight of the two of them.
“This was dangerous, what the hell!”
In a cold sweat, Subaru turned to take a quick look at the passengers on his back.
When the kaii made sure they were safe, he returned to his original size.
Shouma had the idea to call out Subaru too as well, but surely, both him and the little kaii didn’t expect this to happen in the middle of a threatening crisis and to be the life saver on top of it all.
Subaru turned to Shouma and raised his voice angrily.
“You idiot! If you’d fallen from there, you’d be dead!”
Shouma lowered his head. At that time, as surprising as it was, he couldn’t think of anything other than to somehow call Tendou.
It must have been much of a problem for Subaru, to suddenly get relied on, in a haphazard situation.
Amanojaku jumped down abruptly to the side of where Shouma and the others landed safely.
The kaii gritted his teeth in frustration as he glared at them.
“Damn all of you!”
“It’s over. Amanojaku.”
“Don’t think that my longtime cherished dream will end here!”
Lastly, in almost desperation, Amanojaku swung at Tendou.
Tendou, who carelessly avoided it, caught a hold of his attacker’s arm, then pushed the wicked kaii against the tower.
The sound of a mallet striking against steel echoed over and over again.
Tendou brought his face closer to Amanojaku and lowered his voice to a more even tone.
“It doesn’t matter if you were once a god or not. Do you really think you could defeat me after being degraded into an oni?”
As it was, Tendou kicked up his jaw. The edge of Amanojaku’s mouth breached and blood painted the kaii’s face.
Tendou grabbed Amanojaku’s jaw with one hand and held the other up. His feet flapped and scratched in the air.
The difference between their physical strength was overwhelming. Amanojaku, who had thought that no one could match him anymore, now seemed like a small, helpless child.
Tendou gently asked a question.
“Didn’t you know what kind of kaii, I am, Amanojaku?”
“We haven’t seen each other for a while, so maybe you’ve forgotten, But I’ll be kind and teach you just once more.”
Tendou shoved him against the steel tower, as if to bash him once more. The strong and sudden impact slightly distorted the pillar of the mast.
The kaii’s whole body pranced and twitched.
Tendou broughted his red, fruit-like eyes to the almost scrunched Amanojaku.
“Heed my words, kaii. Shuten-Douji is the chieftain of all the oni!”
